by Nuro
The Nuro R3 is Nuro's third-generation purpose-built autonomous delivery vehicle and the first self-driving vehicle to receive a regulatory exemption from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), allowing it to operate legally on public roads without a human driver or passenger cabin. The R3 is roughly half the width of a standard car, enabling navigation through residential streets and parking lots inaccessible to larger autonomous vehicles. An external front airbag system — patented by Nuro — activates automatically if a pedestrian is struck, representing an industry-first active safety measure for autonomous delivery vehicles. The R3 carries up to 500 pounds (227kg) of cargo in two heated and cooled compartments, allowing simultaneous delivery of groceries, restaurant orders, and other temperature-sensitive goods. Nuro has conducted commercial pilots with Kroger, Domino's Pizza, FedEx, and Walmart in Houston and Mountain View. The company raised over $2 billion in funding from SoftBank, Google, and others. Nuro's vehicles are not available for direct purchase — the company operates its own fleet as a service for enterprise logistics partners.
